Is an automatic watering system worth it?

Drip lines and sprinklers promise effortless watering. Here's when they earn their keep — and when they don't.

An automatic watering system is one of those garden upgrades that either changes your life or gathers dust in a shed. Whether it's worth it comes down to how you use your garden, what you grow and how busy your summers are.

1

The big win: consistency and time

The real value is the set-and-forget factor. On a timer, plants get consistent, deep watering at the right time of day — even when you're on holiday or working long hours. For busy people with thirsty borders and containers, that's huge.

2

Drip irrigation beats sprinklers for beds

For borders, veg beds and hedges, drip or soaker lines deliver water slowly right at the roots, keeping the soil moist with very little waste. Overhead sprinklers are cheaper but lose a lot to evaporation and wet the foliage.

3

It's not a substitute for good soil

A watering system can't fix poor soil or plants in the wrong spot. Watering makes the biggest difference when the basics — decent soil, matched planting and decent mulching — are already in place.

4

Match it to your garden

For small or low-water gardens, a hose and ten minutes may be all you need. For larger, established planting or frequent travel, the time and hassle a system saves usually more than pays for itself.
