Five simple ways to keep your lawn green all year

A healthy lawn is more about good habits than fancy products. Here are the basics that make the biggest difference.

Most of the lawns we visit aren't struggling because the owner is doing something wrong — they're struggling because a few small jobs get missed at the wrong time of year. The good news is that a genuinely green, healthy lawn comes down to five repeatable habits.

1

Cut less, cut taller

Raise your mower blades over the spring and summer. Longer grass shades the soil, holds moisture better and crowds out weeds and moss. In the hottest weeks, try to leave the grass a little longer than you'd like — it will cope with drought far better.

As a rough guide, aim to remove no more than a third of the blade at any single cut. If the grass has got away from you, ease it down over two or three cuts rather than scalping it in one.

2

Water deeply and rarely

Frequent light watering encourages shallow roots, which means the grass panics the moment the soil dries. Instead, water deeply once or twice a week in a dry spell, giving the soil a proper soak so the roots grow down.

Water early in the morning to keep evaporation low and the lawn dry overnight. A wet lawn at night is the perfect invitation for fungus and disease.

3

Feed little and often

A balanced feed in spring sets the lawn up, but a single big hit won't carry it all year. Lighter feeds through the growing season keep growth steady and even.

If you're not sure what your lawn needs, a soil test removes the guesswork. When in doubt, a general-purpose fertiliser applied at the maker's rate is better than starving the grass entirely.

4

Let the air in

Heavy foot traffic and mowing can compact the soil, starving the roots of air and water. Occasionally aerating the lawn — pulling small cores or slitting the turf — gives the roots room to breathe.

After aeration, the lawn will hold water and feed far more effectively. It's one of the highest-value jobs you can do, and the results are visible within a couple of weeks.

5

Deal with moss and thatch

Moss loves damp, shaded, compacted patches. Rake it out when it appears rather than letting it spread, and it will stay far easier to manage.

If moss keeps returning to the same spot, look at what the underlying cause is — usually shade or drainage — and fix that rather than treating the symptom each spring.
