Plants for autumn colour and foliage

The garden should not fade at the end of summer. These plants bring rich colour and structure through autumn.

Created by jflgardens.co.uk

Every garden can glow in autumn with the right plant choices. Trees, shrubs and perennials turn shades of bronze, gold and red, while berries and seed heads add texture — so the season ends in a blaze of colour rather than a slow fade.

1

Choose trees and shrubs for fiery leaves

Acers, birches, flowering crab apples and shrubs such as cotinus all turn rich reds, oranges and golds in autumn. Position them where the low autumn sun catches the leaves and their colour really shows.

2

Add berries for lasting colour

Berries on cotoneaster, pyracantha, holly and rowan feed the birds and add a glistening splash of colour well into winter. A mix of climbers and shrubs gives you a layer of brightness and interest that lasts through the season.

3

Keep structure with grasses and seed heads

Ornamental grasses and the spent seed heads of hydrangeas, sedums and alliums catch the morning dew and frost beautifully. They bring movement and texture into the garden at a time when it might otherwise go quiet.

4

Plan now for next autumn

The very best autumn borders are planned with colour in mind. As you enjoy this year's show, note which plants star and where the gaps are, so you can add more interest over the next turning of the season.
