The complete winter garden jobs checklist

Winter is far from the garden's quiet season. Here's every worthwhile job to tick off and set yourself up for spring.

The garden takes a visible rest in winter, but there's a long list of quiet jobs that repay you handsomely come spring. Use the shorter, colder days to protect, tidy and plan — you'll thank yourself when everything kicks back into life.

1

Protect the plants you want to keep

Before hard frosts arrive, move tender plants under cover, wrap borderline-hardy shrubs in fleece and raise pots off the ground. A little winter protection now saves you from finding blackened, frost-damaged plants in March.

2

Care for the lawn and borders

Keep off wet, frosty lawns to avoid damaging the sward, tidy fallen leaves and prune where needed. It's the perfect quiet time for jobs like cleaning paths, repairing fences and getting the structure of the garden in order.

3

Plan and get ready for spring

Review last year's successes and failures, order seeds and bulbs, and plan the year's planting. Winter is when good gardeners line up their season — the careful planning now shows as a confident garden later.

4

Feed the soil and the birds

Winter is the time to mulch and enrich beds, spread compost and let the ground rest naturally. It's also when feeding birds matters most, so keep feeders stocked and water available through the coldest weeks.
